Dance Class Rules & Etiquette
The following rules and etiquette are given to duplicate common sense, help establish order, keep Students safe, teach obedience, aid in self-discipline and keep a sense of equality.
Please do not think that the expectation that Students abide by rules and etiquette will create an environment lacking enthusiasm and fun. To the contrary, when everyone understands the expectations placed on them we can only be enlightened, further prepared to enter the world of dance, learn to highest level of our ability, and have fun in a safe and respectful manner.
Please note: The Competition Team will have further Rules & Etiquette that they will be given upon joining the
Orchid Dreams Dance Company.
Dancing has many rules and responsibilities but the benefits and rewards are immense and worth it!
Please arrive 10 minutes early to prepare for class. If possible come in dance attire UNDER warm-ups or street clothes.
Students must wear proper dance uniform and dance shoes for class.
Hair needs to be pulled off of the face and secured. This is in either a ponytail or bun. Please pin bangs that distract away from face. PLEASE NOTE: If the Student is consistently playing with or adjusting their hair, the Instructor will Bobby Pin it back.
The only jewelry allowed will be stud earrings. All other jewelry needs to be removed before class, preferably left at home.
Students must ask to use the Restroom.
If you are going to be late, please call. Once you do arrive at the studio, please wait for the exercise in progress to finish before entering the class.
If a student needs to leave early, please call, notify the Instructor at the beginning of the class, and leave discreetly.
If you need to miss a class, please call. Arrangements can be made so the Student can take another class as a make-up. This must be prearranged. Tuition is not reimbursed for missed classes.
Students should never stop in the middle of an exercise or combination unless an injury is sustained.
Talking, leaning on the barre or walls, yawning, sitting down or leaving class without permission is not accepted.
If the Instructor is working with one Student individually, the other Students in class are expected to continue working on the current exercise, or stretch.
Dancers show respect for others by: keeping their hands to themselves during class, waiting quietly for others to have a turn, waiting until the music is finished before entering the classroom if they are late to class, and talking only when spoken to by the Instructor (or asking a question). Students are expected to help each other, but to only offer ADVICE (not instruction) when it is asked of them and when it is appropriate both in time and method.
Be appreciative of corrections and apply them. Students will progress only as well as they can take corrections.
Do not talk back to your Instructor regardless of the situation. It is improper to question the Instructor's authority. If you have a problem, you may talk to the Instructor after class.
Be kind to your classmates. A positive attitude and tone must be kept at all times in the studio and Lobby.
Displays of temper and rudeness are unacceptable. Your Instructor reserves the right to ask you to sit out if negative behavior is observed. If negative behavior continues, Parents will be called for a meeting to discuss the Student continuing.
If Students cannot participate in class (due to injury, medical problem, etc.) they are expected to sit and take notes.
Students that are injured will be required to bring a Medical Release to return to dance class.
Keep your things neat, in your dancebag and off of the studio floor during class. (Students are allowed into their bags before and after class. If something is need during class they must ask permission from the Instructor).
No gum chewing, eating or drinking (anything but water) is allowed in the studios, and please use the trash can!
Please label shoes and other personal items and do not bring valuables to the studio. ODDC is not responsible for lost or damaged items!
Please leave the dance studio area as soon as your class is over. Remaining in the studio to change clothes, chat with friends, etc. creates a disturbance and often delays the beginning of the next class.
Parents and siblings who are observing a class should remain reasonably quiet at all times.
Parents wishing to discuss their Student's progress with the Instructor should leave a message on the studio phone, or send an email and the Instructor will return the call in a timely fashion. It is very difficult to maintain tight class schedules if we are answering Parents’ questions in between classes. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL DANCE CLASS OBSERVERS
Please help us to do a better job of teaching your children by observing the following studio rules:
Turn the ringer off of your cell phone. If it is an emergency, please discreetly leave the doorway to talk on your phone. (This applies ONLY to Parents and Observers. Students may not answer phone calls during class. If you would like your child to keep their cell phone, it must remain in their dance bag on SILENT. If an emergency situation presents itself in which a Student may need to be contacted during dance class or rehearsal please contact them via the studio phone).
Absolutely no food or drinks on the dance floor and in the studio. This includes toddlers, siblings, and coffee. Dancers are encouraged to bring a re-usable or recyclable water bottle.
Observers may watch through the door. (We may be adding an Observation Window). Please understand, if the noise level of the lobby becomes too loud, the door may be closed.
Do not allow your children (Students or Family of Students) to touch the mirrors. This is a very important safety issue! Not only are they glass, and breakable, but every little finger produces a print which lasts until those large mirrors are cleaned once again.
Do not allow your children (Students or Family of Students) to hang on the barres. The bars are meant to be used as a point of balance, not as weight bearing device; with too much abuse they will pull away from and damage the walls.
Keep all young children completely under your control. Toddlers may not run loose anywhere on the dance floor, as tempting as this may be. This is a safety issue! They are so cute, but keep them safe and close to you.
Leave the teaching to the Instructor. Even if you have been, or are a professional and qualified dancer, while your child is in class, let the Instructor do the teaching. You can practice all you want with your child at home. Orchid Dreams Dance Co. is determined to help Students excel in life, teaching self-confidence, improvisation, perseverance, respect, consideration, discipline, appreciation, and the importance of giving one’s heartfelt effort. We also like to enforce Students supporting one another. We strive to teach our Students the value of a solid dance education, as well as dance etiquette skills that will be useful throughout life. We value all of our wonderful parents, and know that we all want the same thing from our dance class experience: to give our Students the best possible dance education. Thank you for helping us to reach our goals in a positive way.
SPECIAL NOTE:
For the safety of our Students, all Students may be dropped off and picked up within a 10 minute window of their class before or after. As the instructor is focused on the class they are currently instructing they will not be responsible for your child outside of this window. If your child must be dropped off or picked up outside of this window, the Parent must contact the Studio for specifc permission per instance. The Student will then be expected to participate in the class that is being held during that time. Cost is $10 per extra class that the Student will take as a result of early drop off or pick up; due at the time of the class.
